Masks by George Condo

16 Jan

Hearing everyone talking about the recent Kanye West album reminded me of these masks I’d seen by George Condo – the artist responsible for all the different My Beautiful Dark Fantasy covers.

The masks were created for promo shots for fashion designer Adam Kimmel’s Fall/Winter 2010 “Casino Collection”. I remember seeing a viral kinda promo video of these guys (edit: you can watch the video on Adam Kimmel’s website), but it didn’t translate as well into motion in my opinion. But how creepy are they in stills!

Victor Castillo’s cartoon hell

21 Dec

Victor Castillo paints a cartoon hellish world of nightmarish nostalgia. It appears that he no doubt grew up on a healthy dose of 20’s-40’s Fleischer / Disney / Warner Bros cartoons (maybe not unlike this one), in those under-lit blank sausage nosed mask faces with holes for eyes. It feels to me like a renaissance painting for a horrifying cartoon dimension. Someone should tap him to direct / art direct an animation of some capacity! That would be the catalyst of many a kids AND adults nightmares.

Ian Strange aka Kid Zoom

7 Dec

It’s kinda weird to say, but awesome, that probably my favourite graff artist of the moment would have to be Kid Zoom. Weird yet awesome, because he’s from here in little old Perth. Kid Zoom is now hanging out in New York, under the mentorship of Ron English (!), and a show opening this Saturday in NY (details below).
I don’t know how he does what he does with an aerosol can, that detail and realism. Unreal. So if you’re in New York, you should get down to the show before Kid Zoom blows up ala Banksy et al.

Ron English collab?
