Struwwelpeter by Bob Staake and Wyld Stallyons

31 May

Stumbled across this animation test by Wyld Stallyons, of “The Boy Who Sucked His Thumbs” by Bob Staake, from his Struwwelpeter book. I have a few of Staake’s books but can’t believe I hadn’t seen this one before. And this animation is BRILLIANT! Coupled with the Tom Waits song, it’s perfect.

I could watch it all day! Now to get my hands on the book…

If you’re interested in process, the videos of Bob Staake working on youtube are a must. He works with Photoshop 3.0 (NOT CS3, 3.0!). You’ll see! His interview on Escape From Illustration Island is gold too – such a dude.

Tyger (short film)

12 Feb

Tyger from Birdo Studio on Vimeo.

Thinking about the Samuel Casal post the other day, I realised I hadn’t actually checked out the short film that sparked the post in the first place (after seeing stills from the Gold winner in the 2008 (?) 3×3 Animation category).

The short in question is Tyger, directed by Guilherme Marcondes and based on the William Blake poem of the same name. Tyger features a giant puppeteered tiger wreaking havoc on a city, spreading it’s glowing ghostlike foliage plague, that turns all the people into all manners of animals. It’s an interesting mix of styles and techniques that surprisingly work in it’s favour. Great animation by Birdo as well!

Blockhead – The Music Scene (The animation of Anthony Francisco Schepperd)

4 Dec

Recommended by Courtney is this totally awesome psychedelic music video for Blockhead’s “The Music Scene”, animated and directed by Anthony Francisco Schepperd. I imagine this would be an unreal experience for those on drugs – with the way the animation is syncopated with the music. Characters metamorphosing, turning into liquid, and just generally making a whole lot of sense in it’s nonsensicalness. Watch it once for for the eyegasm, and then again for the narrative!

And then you should also watch this one for Ape Schools’ “Wail To God”.  Be sure to watch to the end. Slightly NSFW for one reason, two words: BOOB MOUNTAIN.
