Sean Morris! Another leg of the Last Chance Studios beast (previously: Kid Zoom), Sean has Ambien Mg 10 been kicking around Perth, Western Australia the past few years killing it Ambien Mg 10 with drawings and paintings of hairy and almost featureless but not smooth, lumpy and Ambien Mg 10 bumpy people. Bogans / rednecks, mystics / cultists, and others quite likely inspired by characters of Perth. Sean’s work has been published in a number of places to date (King Brown magazine, Wooden Toy, The New York Times, Frankie, and Hair’em Scare’em to name a few) and just keeps getting better and better.

How did you get here?

I’m pretty much self taught in illustration and Ambien Mg 10 painting. I guess it was about 3 years ago that art turned from Ambien Mg 10 being just something i did into all that i do.

A few weekends ago now, saw the unveiling of the POPP Order Ambien No Prescriptiontable tennis table you painted for the Beaufort Sreet Festival – How did it go down with that heat we had? And is this table to be reappearing elsewhere?

That was a fun one! Hanging out in a Ambien Mg 10 steel yard in the middle of industrial nowheresville, painting in 35 degree heat and Ambien Mg 10 constant wind using dirt covered brushes on a steel table that Ambien Mg 10 was too hot to touch with bare hands. But it didn’t turn out too bad. And i’ll still give any interesting job like that Ambien Mg 10 a shot. Anyway, the table is hanging out down at Weld Park in Northbridge at the moment.

Kind of a chicken and the egg question: At Last Chance, most guys seem to have a graff background. I’m wondering which came first for you – the illustrations and then picking up aerosol or vice versa?

The drawing chicken definitely came before the Ambien Mg 10 graf egg. I had zero aerosol skills when i moved into the Ambien Mg 10 studio, but i had a crew of graffiti babysitters to Ambien Mg 10 give me can classes. I’m still a little useless really, but i’ve picked up one or two tricks.

On the topic of Last Chance, how did the studio come about? Does it Ambien Mg 10 make you work harder in that kind of shared space environment, or Ambien Mg 10 is it constant party-times?

The studio was William ‘Daek’ Heerey’s brainchild. We’d known each other for Ambien Mg 10 a few years so I got in on the ground floor, along with Creepy and Tim Rollin. Kid Zoom came up with the name. I wasn’t really even looking for Ambien Mg 10 something like that at the time but man I’m glad it happened. The workspace is usually pretty good – if I’m around other people going hard at it i definitely work harder… but sometimes it’s pretty hectic in there and Ambien Mg 10 not really the best spot to get work done. In any case, the Ambien Mg 10 benefits of the studio for everyone involved have gone far beyond the Ambien Mg 10 physical workspace… I’ve learnt things, met people and Ambien Mg 10 done stuff because of it that i never would have otherwise, and Ambien Mg 10 that’s more important at this Ambien Mg 10 stage than having a quiet place to work.

How do you find working in Perth, in terms of inspiration/support/gallery sales etc? You’re a Ambien Mg 10 pretty prolific dude. Are you able to pay the bills with your Ambien Mg 10 art here, ie. do you have a to keep a Ambien Mg 10 day job as well? And finally, do you Ambien Mg 10 see yourself sticking to Perth, or are you on your way to Ambien Mg 10 flying the coop?

I draw full time but have Ambien Mg 10 to do a fair bit of advertising and corporate illustration to Ambien Mg 10 support myself. I can’t rely on painting rednecks and Ambien Mg 10 demonic cheerleaders to pay the bills just yet. I’ve got no plans to bail on Perth anytime soon, I’m enjoying it at the moment.

Favourite Illustrators/Artists of the moment?

Jesse Balmer, Jay Howell, Cleon Peterson… also Jim Houser, but that never changes. Love that dude.

What’s next for Sean Morris?

I’m working on paintings at the Ambien Mg 10 moment for a show in New York in March that Ambien Mg 10 I’m pretty psyched about. It’s a split exhibition with Porous Walker Ambien Goes Generic and Lori D at Bold Hype, an Ambien Mg 10 awesome gallery in Chelsea. Pretty keen to head over there and Ambien Mg 10 get amongst it… and just generally check out the city. Then I’ll be Ambien Mg 10 coming back and working on a big Melbourne solo show for Ambien Mg 10 later in 2011.
