Thomas Ott

Thomas Ott is one of, if not my favourite illustrator. He uses scraperboard exclusively to create these black and white insanely detailed and textured illustrations. And what could be more badarse than drawing with a box-cutter? Thomas Ott creates wordless comics – of which are bleak, never a happy ending to be found. The stories reminiscent of EC comics and The Twilight Zone etc., but matched with his super-tight illustrations and the atmosphere that the scraperboard technique gives, it can’t be beaten.
Watch the video to see Mr Ott in action.

Up until recently Thomas Ott didn’t have a website up, so it was hard to find anything on him – but now that he does, there’s LOADS to check out.
Also just released is R.I.P., a new hardcover book collecting 19 previously released short comics (from Tales Of Error, Dead End and Greetings From Hellville (of which I think may now be out of print), as well as other shorts from publications/anthologies difficult to find due to the language barrier / lack of availability etc. Fantagraphics are apparently putting out the English edition early next year.
